Representing a membership of approximately 7000 planning professionals across Canada, the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) has been dedicated to the advancement of responsible planning since 1919.
Mission Statement
The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is a collaborative national federation that advances professional planning excellence through the delivery of membership and public services in Canada and abroad.
Working on behalf of planners and the planning profession, CIP serves as the national voice of Canada's planning community. In its capacity as the national professional institute and certification body for the planning profession in Canada, CIP has a mandate from its membership to:
- champion and lead progress and change in planning practice;
- act as the authoritative voice and the primary information and knowledge sharing network for planners;
- address issues of importance to the planning profession and/or the public interest;
- institute national standards for training, certification and best practices achieved through continued professional development of its membership; and
- deliver relevant and contemporary benefits and services to its members.
Our Members work in the public service and the private sector, in a wide variety of fields including land use planning, environmental resource management, land development, heritage conservation, social planning, transportation planning and economic development.

- The Great Places in Canada contest is back for a second year as people across the country begin nominating and voting for their favourite locations today.
- Work continues towards the completion of the Planning for the Future project and implementation of the new standards and procedures arising from it.
- The 2nd annual Caribbean Urban Forum (CUF2012) will be held from 14–17 March 2012 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston, Jamaica.
